Plan and share your route

The simple habit that gets help to you fast if something goes wrong.

Most hiking rescues start with one question: where were they going? Make sure someone can answer it.

Before you go

  1. Pick the route and a turnaround time. Decide the time you'll turn back, even if you haven't reached the top.
  2. Check the weather and daylight. Plan to be off exposed ridges before afternoon storms.
  3. Download offline maps of the whole route to your phone.

Leave a trip plan with someone you trust

  • Trail name, start point and where you'll park.
  • Who's with you, and your phone numbers.
  • When you expect to finish, and when they should raise the alarm if they haven't heard from you.
  • Local emergency number and the nearest ranger station or barangay hall.

On the trail

  • Send a quick message at the summit or turnaround point.
  • If plans change, tell your contact.
  • Keep your phone warm and charged; carry a small power bank.

When you're back

Tell your contact you're safe. A trip plan only works if it's always closed.
