The five-minute check before every ride

Catch the problems that cause most breakdowns and crashes, before you leave home.

Most roadside problems can be spotted at home. Do this every ride; it soon becomes a habit.

1. Tyres (1 minute)

  • Pump to your pressure. Use the tire pressure tool on the cycling page to find it.
  • Spin each wheel and look for cuts, glass and worn patches.

2. Brakes (1 minute)

  • Squeeze each lever hard. It should stop well before touching the handlebar.
  • Rim brakes: pads hit the rim, not the tyre. Disc brakes: no rubbing or squealing.

3. Quick releases and thru-axles (30 seconds)

  • Both wheels firmly closed. Lift the bike and drop it from a few centimetres: nothing should rattle.

4. Chain and gears (1 minute)

  • Run through the gears. Skipping or noise means it needs adjusting.
  • A dry or squeaky chain needs lube; wipe off the extra.

5. Lights, kit and phone (1 minute)

  • Front and rear lights charged, even for a day ride.
  • Spare tube, levers, mini pump, multi-tool, water and ID.

If anything fails, fix it before you go. A five-minute check is cheaper than a long walk home.
